Competency 6: Citation Pearl Growing

For this competency I chose to use the Lexis Nexis database. After an hour of fruitless searching, I changed to the Jstor database. I began using the terms technology or computers and library and research and student for my search. 34343 results were given. I searched through the first few pages, and most articles were about research at a college level, or at a strictly research school. I changed my terminology to include high school library. This also resulted in a large number of hits, 24193. I then put high school library in quotation marks. 109 hits were shown with more relevant articles for my search. I clicked on the article A Librarian's Perspective on Research http://online.twu.edu/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp?tab_id=_13_1 which was about a college librarian who helped a middle school student in their research. I then chose the link to related articles which led me to Helping Students Weave their way through the World Wide Web http://www.jstor.org/pss/821223. This article is about an English teacher who had to devise lessons to help students find accurate and credible articles on the internet as not everything on the internet is accurate. I could not read the whole article without signing up for access to the specific database this article was in. Overall, the Jstor database has a wide variety of information, but seems to have a controlled vocabulary because I had to be very specific in my search to come close to the information I wanted.

Competency 6: Building Block Search

For the building block search, I chose the ASC database. I wanted to find articles about using technology to perform research in the library. I first put in the terms technology or computers and research or explore and library. This search resulted in 8872 hits. Way too many. I narrowed it down by changing the search parameters to subject terms. 330 hits were produced. Better, but still too many. Next I added the term student. This time, 20 hits came back. Much more manageable and almost every hit seemed usable. Building block search was overwhelming at first with all the hits that it gave me. However, by narrowing it down only two times, I got a manageable list of possible resources. The hit I looked at is called Improving the Student Experience-How Can the Library Help? by Jean Sykes at http://ezproxy.twu.edu:2057/login.aspx?direct=true&db=a9h&AN=27394902&site=ehost-live

I chose Social Software in Libraries: Building Collaboration, Communication, and Community Online by Meredith G Farkas. I chose this book because from the reviews by other readers, it sounds like it has a lot of good ideas about using new technology in the library. It also sounds like it puts the new technology in plain, simple English for those who are not completely computer-savvy.

Competency 4:RSS Feed

The RSS Feed site that I chose is School Library Journal-Education Technology News . I chose this site because the articles are about current technology and its place in the library. Several articles are about the technology itself, while others are about what librarians can do to incorporate technology into their program. It also deals with how technology may affect the future of librarianship. I think it is important for school librarians to keep up with technology to better service the students and teachers.

Competency 3: Podcasts

The podcast that I chose is called "Library 2.0" by Helene Blowers. I liked this podcast because it gives information about a program that teaches how to use 2.0 web tools. Anyone can use this program because it is online and gives step by step instructions for tools such as blogs, wiki pages, podcasts, and more. Because it is all online, there are no meetings to attend. Everyone completes the program at their own pace. I used Google to search for podcasts and found the podcast on the School Library Journal website. The podcast is located at http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/index.asp?layout=audio&element_id=2140024294

Competency 2: Related Blog

The blog I chose for this competency is "Moving Toward Web 2.0 in k-12 Education." I found this blog using Googleblog search. I found this blog while looking for information on how to get teachers more excited about using technology in the library. I liked this blog because it shows how most teachers are in the same place: technologically behind students. Often times, students know more about how to use newer technology than teachers. Most teachers do not want to admit that. However, this blog points out that anyone can learn.

One of the amazing impacts of Web 2.0 is watching long-time educators have their own personal learning transformed by these new tools of Web participation---especially as they discover professional development venues on the Web that help to release the inclinations to help others that often prompted them to become teachers. Their own experiences with Web 2.0 in this regard dramatically shape new expectations for what opportunities they are going to provide their students. But other educators are understandably afraid: of the learning curve, of the changes taking place, and of their own ability to play a valuable role in an educational world shaped by the individualized learning and "unlimited" content and opportunities. Used to being the provider or dispenser of knowledge and the authority, they are unsure of the role they would play in a world of Web 2.0 education. They are also, and often rightly, concerned that academic rigor is being lost in a world of easy creation and limited constraints.

As a librarian, I hope to encourage teachers to incorporate new technology into their lesson plans. (After I learn how to use it, of course!) Students will be much more willing to participate if lessons involve the newest technology.

Competency 1

This blog was created to satisfy requirements for a graduate class on information storage and retrieval. My main interest and topic is to create more interest from teachers to use technology in the library for research or project purposes. The library type I am interested in is public school, high school level.
